History of “The Strand”

From small beginnings in 1714, Strand has grown into a thriving town & vacation destination and offers a wide range of activities and miles of white, sandy beaches.

Situated on the shores of False Bay at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, Strand is an easy 30 minute drive from Cape Town. It is a bustling metropolis of some 50 000 residents and forms part of the picturesque Helderberg Basin, along with Somerset West and Gordon's Bay.

Strand is an ideal family venue for swimming, sunbathing and a variety of watersports or a great location to start your journey up the Garden Route to places like Mossel Bay, George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.

Amenities nearby

The main beach is Melkbaai, reputedly one of the safest bathing areas in the country.

Nearby Dune Park has a super-tube and mini-golf, and the adjacent Harmony Park features a huge tidal pool.

A wide variety of organised sport is available, including an internationally rated golf course, tennis courts, rugby fields, squash clubs, jukskei and water sports including board sailing, surfing, sailing, power-boating and paddle-skiing.

Surfing and the many surfers who frequent Strand have imbued the seaside region with a laid-back culture. The Pipe is a specially designated surfing area, famous for its good waves.

Apart from swimming in the ocean, Strand also boasts an Olympic sized, covered, centrally heated swimming pool which is open all year round to the public.

The coast between the Lourens River Mouth and up to Rooi Els is very popular with beach fishermen and rock anglers, whilst organised and social diving activities beckon the more adventurous.

The waves are safe for beginners and attracts many young surfers to Strand, particularly when the surf is good. Many of the surfing spots are quite far from shore, yet they remain extremely popular despite the risk of sharks, probably owing to the protection offered by False Bay. For those serious about the sport, popular surf spots include AECI, Blinkklip, Pipe, Duckies, Reef, Silkies, Die Poort and Greenways.

A promenade lines the beach and showcases a mix of restaurants, cafés and shops. Strand offers a wide variety of restaurants, guaranteed to appease even the most selective palate. There is also a large selection of shopping conveniences, from the comprehensive Somerset Mall situated just outside the town to the local Dorpsmeent Centre, one would be hard pressed not to find a needed or desired service.

Strand forms an ideal base from which visitors can explore the Cape Peninsula and the surrounding areas:

* The majestic Peninsula with its renowned coastal drive from Muizenberg to Cape Point to Hout Bay via the scenic Chapman’s Peak to Sea Point drive;

* Cape Town, the Mother City, with Table Mountain brooding over the city and the vibrant V&A Waterfront;

* The West Coast and Swartland;

* Strand is a mere 25km from the scenic Boland with its wine routes and heart of the winelands - Stellenbosch;

* Enjoy one of the greatest sites for whale watching as you travel along the coastal road past Gordon's Bay to Betty's Bay and Hermanus.
